WHO WE ARE

John Bero_Sitting on Column Capital_1989.jpg

Bero Architecture is a company of dedicated designers and historians committed to conscientiously improving upon and documenting the built environment through our technical expertise and collaboration with our clients and the broader community.

We are a passionate and capable team of professionals who provide full Architecture, Preservation Planning, Building Evaluation, and Interior Design services in our nuanced approach to Historic Preservation practice. We work closely with our clients and their communities to carefully shape and inform their vision through research, documentation, and thoughtful study of potential design solutions.

Founded by John Bero in 1976 with a small team of architects and a vision to carefully rehabilitate buildings through an in-depth understanding of their historical context and physical evolution; we have expanded and carried on John’s original vision fostering decades-long relationships with clients, community organizations, and colleagues to ensure meaningful and lasting stewardship of our community’s collective history.

Our work is driven by curiosity and creativity while ensuring sympathetic reuse and appropriate care so we can leave the best of our cultural heritage to future generations.

“Preservation should be understood as a way to sympathetically and intelligently adapt to our changing world of architecture, it should not be used as a means to halt or stifle progress blindly.”

— John Bero, Founder

IN THE NEWS

Wharton Studio & Cafe Groundbreaking

Our work on the historic buildings within the City of Ithaca’s Stewart Park in partnership with the Friends of Stewart Park and the Wharton Studio Museum continues! In late 2024, the project team kicked off the first phase of our rehabilitation of the historic Picnic Pavilion for both park and museum patrons. We look forward to leading our design vision to completion over the next few years.

Asbury First United Methodist Church - Community Outreach Center

Our work with our longtime client to comprehensively rehabilitate, expand, and adapt a significant historic mansion on Rochester’s East Avenue to serve as a hub for their multitude of community service programs was recognized by The Landmark Society of Western New York with their highest honor, the Barber Conable Award. The Outreach Center, over a decade in planning and construction, was both one of the most challenging and fulfilling projects in our firm’s history.

Jamestown Historic Resource Survey

Our clients Jamestown Renaissance Corporation secured a grant from the Preservation League of New York State earlier this year to update their cultural resource survey to continue guiding current and future preservation efforts in their community. We are excited to revisit and expand our original work from 1993 to further capture Jamestown’s rich cultural heritage and architectural history.

Architect by Day, Preservation Hero by Night

Project Architect, Christopher Brandt, was a recent guest on the popular podcast, True Tales from Old Houses hosted by Stacy Grinsfelder and Daniel Kanter. During the episode he discusses his ongoing preservation work on his historic home, community advocacy work, and his day job rehabilitating historic buildings at Bero Architecture.

From the Archives

Twenty-five years ago in January 1990, our restoration of the primary interior rooms of the George Eastman House debuted to the public. We have continued to collaborate with the George Eastman Museum on multiple restoration, preservation, and rehabilitation projects during the ensuing three decades, but this project holds a special place in our heart.
